J.B. Warren Mill

The Warren Mill located on King St. W circa 1910
A982.46.8  file 486

This flourmill was owned and operated by John Borlase Warren from 1837 to 1865, after which it changed possession numerous times until 1892. The mill itself was located at the ‘Hollow’ on King St. on the east side of the Oshawa Creek.  Warren’s fortunes flourished for 25 years and during two time periods in particular, they thrived.  The first time was during the Crimean War (1854-56) where he prospered in wheat, and the second time during the American Civil War (1861-64), but at the close of this conflict hard times hit the grain and milling business.  Due to this, the losses Warren suffered ruined him and by 1865, the Gibbs brothers purchased all of Warren’s assets.  Besides Warren being financially ruined, many farmers were also broke and the blame was placed solely on Warren.
