The 'Hollow'
The ‘Hollow’ was home to many industries in Oshawa, including the Warren Mill, Oshawa Canning Co., and W.J. Hare Iron, just to name a few. Its location near the Oshawa Creek is probably why it was such a popular area to start up a business as the water could be used for power. Although it would have seemed to be the ideal place for an industry, there were many causes for the abandonment of the ‘Hollow’. The most important would be the annual flooding of the Oshawa Creek. The flood waters of the creek swamped the lower stories of the factories, and would destroy products and raw materials. The ‘Hollow’ was once a hub of industry in Oshawa, but was pushed aside when new, and better locations arose. |
